Rhythm training

Body – Voice – Drum  (B-V-D)

Since more than 15 years Murat Coskun is working with his own method of rhythm training for odd rhythms, where he is combining frame drums, singing, body percussion and dance steps. The aim is to establish a natural feeling and a solid timing for odd rhythms (i.a. odd meters in 5/8, 7/8 and 9/8). That will be helpful to play a nice groove and will give a a strong fundament for improvising. One other aspect is also to develop the independent playing/ feeling with odd rhythms in different ways: drumming combined with singing, dancing and independent playing on two frame drums. The spectrum is from very „simple“ grooves and combinations up to more complex forms with groupings and rhythmic overlays.

The grooves, melodies, songs and dance steps are inspired by the deep tradition of Turkish music and combined with Murat´s own choreographies and small compositions (e.g. "This is very difficult") and with rhythmical concepts from South Indian (tihais like "tadinta" or „talanga“) or North Africa.

In the online lessons, the students will also have the opportunity to watch videos, listen to many sound examples and learn to analyze and count the odd rhythms.

Program:

Murat Coskun would like to take anyone who is interested to his small "frame drum online laboratory".
Here he presents his very personal research and "discoveries", experiments, his own creations and ways of playing. He also gives suggestions and tips for at home, to set up your own "laboratory" and to give your own curiosity and creativity space. The focus is on the most diverse "frame drum types" and their properties. It's also about additional "add-ons" that can be used to change or expand sounds.
Other components are composition and improvisation as well as groove accompaniments in the most diverse musical directions.
